The Hondius cruise ship, under surveillance due to a hantavirus incident, has arrived at the port of Granadilla in Tenerife, following a decision by the Central Government that contradicts the initial stance of the Canarian Government.

The arrival of the Hondius cruise ship at the port of Granadilla has reignited the conflict between the Canarian Government and the Central Government. Despite initial opposition from Canarian authorities, the Directorate General of Merchant Marine issued a resolution allowing the vessel's entry into the state-owned port, and even opening the door for it to dock.

"The current situation of the 'MV Hondius' vessel poses a dual risk: from a maritime safety perspective, there is a need for onboard medical assistance, with operational limitations to keep people on the vessel for longer. An eventual meteorological deterioration has also been reported. From a health perspective, Spanish health authorities, in coordination with those of other countries, have organized a special health operation for controlled disembarkation in front of the port of Granadilla (Tenerife)."

The Merchant Marine resolution argues that health control is more effective in a prepared port than by keeping the vessel indefinitely at sea. Furthermore, it highlights that the port of Granadilla, in Tenerife, has industrial characteristics and relative isolation, which minimizes interaction with the civilian population and offers ample operational areas for necessary actions.
The Canarian Government had expressed its displeasure with the decision, calling it a «disregard» and stating its refusal to authorize the ship's anchoring, considering it potentially dangerous according to its technicians. The controversy intensified when it was revealed that some flights for the repatriation of passengers and crew would be delayed until Monday, implying a longer stay for the vessel in Canarian waters.

"I am tremendously disappointed, because I did not expect the Government of Spain to treat the Canary Islands with such disdain, such contempt."

The state resolution imposes the reception of the Hondius in the port of Granadilla, either by anchoring or docking, as determined by the authorities responsible for the health operation. The Granadilla Port Authority must provide the necessary pilotage, towing, and mooring services, in compliance with the duty of collaboration between administrations.
