Wineries from the Canary Islands shone in the latest edition of the Mondial des Vins Extrêmes, winning 26% of all awarded prizes. The archipelago secured 42 grand gold medals, 57 gold medals, and 6 special awards, including the World Extreme Wines Award for the region with the highest participation.
The Pico Cho Marcial Afrutado 2025, produced by SAT Viticultores Comarca de Güímar (DOP Valle de Güímar), was awarded the Grand CERVIM 2026 Prize, recognizing the wine with the highest absolute score in the competition. The same entity received the Special CERVIM 2026 Prize for the company with the best score.
In total, heroic viticulture from the Canary Islands garnered 105 awards, surpassing the previous year's tally by 14 accolades. This achievement occurred at the 34th edition of the competition, organized by the Center for Research, Studies, Protection, Coordination, and Valorization of Mountain Viticulture (CERVIM), with its final phase held in Italy on August 25th and 26th. Over 200 Canarian wines were registered, setting a new record.
The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty, Narvay Quintero, highlighted that this result "reflects the talent, effort, and dedication of the Islands' winegrowers, winemakers, and oenologists." He emphasized the ability of Canarian professionals to "produce wines of extraordinary quality and personality, competing at the highest level despite the extreme production conditions imposed by our territory."
Heroic viticulture is characterized by cultivation on slopes exceeding 30%, high altitudes, or isolated areas, necessitating manual labor. These vineyards, which are uncommon, represent only 5% of European vineyards. The competition brought together 1,175 entries from 432 companies across 22 countries.
Ten Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) regions from the archipelago received medals. DOP Islas Canarias was the most awarded with 25 medals, followed by DOP Abona (22), DOP Tacoronte-Acentejo (14), DOP Valle de Güímar (8), DOP Lanzarote (7), DOP Gran Canaria (6), DOP La Gomera and DOP El Hierro (5 each), DOP La Palma (4), and DOP Valle de La Orotava (3).
Among the 6 special awards, in addition to the World Extreme Wines Award 2026 recognizing the Canary Islands as the territory with the highest participation, is the Grand CERVIM 2026 Prize for the Pico Cho Marcial Afrutado 2025. The winery SAT Viticultores Comarca de Güímar also received the Special CERVIM 2026 Prize for the best company score by country.
Other notable awards include the CERVIM Excellence Prize 2026 for Quíquere Blanco Seco 2025 (Bodega Gallo & Quíquere Wines), the Vinofed Prize 2026 for the best dry wine for the same wine, and the CERVIM Original Prize 2026 for Timanfaya Moscatel Dulce Selección 1999 (Bodegas Timanfaya, DOP Lanzarote), made from ungrafted vines.
Grand gold medals were awarded to wines such as Pico Cho Marcial Afrutado 2025 (SAT Viticultores Comarca de Güímar), several from Bodega Gallo & Quíquere Wines, Gavias del Sordo, Bodegas Tajinaste, Bodega Linaje de Pago, and Pago de los Cercados under DOP Islas Canarias. DOP Abona also saw wines from Bodega Mencey Chasna, Bodega Reverón, and Sociedad Cooperativa Cumbres de Abona awarded.
DOP La Palma was recognized with grand gold medals for Vega Norte and Juan Jesús Pérez y Adrián. DOP La Gomera awarded Fernanluis S.C. and Bodega Niray. In DOP Lanzarote, Bodegas Martinón and Bodegas Timanfaya SL received grand gold medals.
DOP El Hierro recognized Bodega Padrón and Sociedad Cooperativa del Campo Frontera. DOP Tacoronte-Acentejo awarded Bodegas Cráter and Bodegas Marba, S.L., while DOP Gran Canaria distinguished Bodegas Las Tirajanas. DOP Valle de Güímar recognized SAT Viticultores Comarca de Güímar.
Gold medals were awarded to wines from DOP Islas Canarias by SAT Viticultores Comarca de Güímar, Bodega Gallo & Quíquere Wines, Bodega Gavias El Sordo, Bodegas El Lomo, Bodegas Insulares Tenerife S.A., Bodegas Tajinaste S.L., Bodegas Conatvs, Linaje del Pago, and Finca Parque Los Olivos.
In DOP Tacoronte-Acentejo, gold medals were won by Bodegas Cráter, Bodegas Insulares Tenerife S.A., Bodega Guayonge, Bodega Viña El Drago, Linaje del Pago, Cándido Hernández Pío, and the winery Trancao de Acentejo.
DOP Abona awarded gold medals to Sociedad Cooperativa Cumbres de Abona, Bodega Mencey Chasna, and Bodegas Reverón. Within DOP Valle de Güímar, SAT Viticultores Comarca de Güímar received several gold medals.
DOP Gran Canaria distinguished Bodega Bentayga, Bodegas Las Tirajanas, SAT, and Bodega Ventura. In DOP Lanzarote, Bodegas El Grifo, Bodegas Martinón, and Bodegas Timanfaya SL received gold medals.
Finally, in DOP Valle de La Orotava, Bodega Illada, Bodega La Haya, and Bodega Tafuriaste were awarded. DOP El Hierro recognized Sociedad Cooperativa del Campo Frontera and Explotaciones Elysar SLU. In DOP La Gomera, Fernanluis S.C. and Bodega Niray also secured accolades.
