Tacoronte celebrated the Octava del Cristo 2026 this Sunday, the most significant day of the festive program honoring the Santísimo Cristo de los Dolores. Despite the persistent threat of rain, thousands of people attended, many arriving from different parts of the Island, particularly from the Valle de Güímar.
The day began at six in the morning with the opening of the Sanctuary doors to welcome the first pilgrims. Following the nine o'clock religious service, the fortieth edition of the Craft Fair was inaugurated, featuring seventy stalls and showcasing handmade products from nearly a hundred professionals across the Archipelago. This artisan market, organized by the Culture Department, included musical performances by local groups La Alhóndiga and Virgen de Fátima de Agua García.
The transfer of the Pendón from the Consistorial Houses to the Sanctuary of the Christ marked the most important part of the day. The Municipal Corporation, led by mayor Sandra Izquierdo, along with deputy mayors Noemí García and José Caro, the 2026 town crier Victoria Palma, and a large group of authorities from neighboring towns such as El Sauzal, Güímar, Arafo, and Candelaria, were present. National deputies Juan Antonio Rojas and Cristina Valido, Canary parliamentarians Luz Reverón and Nira Fiero, the first vice-president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Lope Afonso, and island councilors José Carlos Acha and Efraín Medina were also notable figures.
Inside the temple, the Bishop of the Nivariense Diocese, Eloy Alberto Santiago, presided over the Octava del Cristo mass, sung by the Coral Polifónica of the Santa Cecilia Musical Group. At the end of the sermon, the rector of the Sanctuary, Elisuán Delgado, expressed his gratitude and announced the suspension of the procession due to rain.
Despite the adverse weather, the last Sunday of the festivities honoring the Cristo de Tacoronte was supported by several thousand people. The usual festive atmosphere prevailed around the plaza, with residents and visitors gradually approaching to enjoy the wide range of activities organized for these days of hustle and healthy coexistence. The Music Band of the Santa Cecilia Musical Group, led by Antonio Ordóñez, was another key protagonist, animating the institutional ceremony of the Pendón transfer and demonstrating their talent and commitment to Tacoronte's cultural and festive scene.
