During his visit to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Pope Leo XIV was presented with several historical gifts from the Diocese of the Canary Islands. Among them was a genealogical tree that harbored the hope that the pontiff might have "Canary origins," as stated by auxiliary bishop Cristóbal Déniz upon its presentation. This remark drew applause from attendees at the Cathedral of Santa Ana.
The presentation of the genealogical tree took place at the conclusion of the pontiff's meeting with the clergy, consecrated life, and pastoral agents of the Diocese of the Canary Islands. Earlier, the Pope had arrived at the cathedral after receiving the Golden Key of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and traveling by popemobile to the Cathedral, greeting the faithful gathered in Vegueta.
The bishop of the Diocese of the Canary Islands, José Mazuelos, welcomed the pontiff along with two children dressed in traditional Canarian attire who presented him with a floral offering. After the entrance rite, Pope Leo XIV paused before the Blessed Sacrament before taking his episcopal seat.
In addition to the genealogical tree, the Pope received a framed document containing the bull of Pope Eugene IV, dated 1435, which ordered the relocation of the bishopric's see from Rubicón to Gran Canaria and its designation as the Canariense-Rubicense Bishopric. The same frame also included the first statutes of the Cathedral Chapter of the Canary Islands, from 1483, both historical documents of the Diocese.
The list of gifts was completed with the gold medal of the Cathedral of Santa Ana, also presented during the pontiff's farewell at the temple. The meeting at the Cathedral was part of the Pope's itinerary in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which included an institutional reception and a mass scheduled at the Estadio de Gran Canaria.
