The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will reinforce security in the area of the Sunday market to address the proliferation of irregular street vending. The Councilor for Security and Emergencies, Josué Íñiguez, announced in a Plenary Commission that the current deployment is not achieving the desired results in controlling activity outside the official market grounds, particularly in Simón Bolívar street.
Íñiguez acknowledged the need for more intensive intervention, as the private security managing the market, under the direction of the Local Development department, does not cover the adjacent areas where sales and exchanges of materials, sometimes collected from trash, take place.
For his part, the councilor from the PP, Ignacio García Marina, described the situation as a Sunday "chaos," pointing to the "degradation of Parque Blanco" and mentioning the resale of materials and second-hand items, beyond counterfeit goods.
The Security councilor insisted that the problem is "of a different nature" but confirmed the police reinforcement, responding to requests from residents and the Local Development department, headed by Pedro Quevedo.
This measure follows an incident two weeks ago, where a man stole from a stall and later assaulted an officer at the Parque Santa Catalina police station. Local Police unions have been warning since late 2024 about the "lack of control" in the area, which has sometimes required special deployments, thus reducing police presence in other parts of the city.
