The Telde City Council celebrates this Thursday the International Day of Rural Women by recognizing the work of three women linked to the municipality's primary sector: Felisa Vega, Elena Sánchez, and Carolina Medina.

The municipality of Telde commemorates this Thursday the International Day of Rural Women with an homage ceremony for three prominent women in the local primary sector. The event, organized by the Primary Sector Department, will take place at the Casa Condal starting at 5:30 PM.
During the ceremony, the careers of Felisa Vega from Bodega Señorío de Cabrera; Elena Sánchez from Molino de Fuego; and Carolina Medina from Granja Tío Isidro will be honored. These women represent agriculture, the production of traditional goods, and food production in Telde.
The day's program includes a cultural offering with the play Herederas de la Zafra by the IES Carrizal, the presentation of the publication Mujeres del Vino, and the screening of a video featuring testimonials. The event will conclude with a tasting of local products and a musical performance by the timple player Laura Martel.
This celebration marks the end of a week of activities that allowed participants to visit agricultural farms, wineries, and traditional food production sites. Visits included Bodegas Bentayga in Tejeda and Bodega Señorío de Cabrera, where the recovery of winemaking activity and a recent award at the XXX Official Wine Competition of Gran Canaria 2026 were highlighted.
Additionally, the Molino de Fuego was visited by approximately 23 people, who learned about the traditional gofio production process from Elena Sánchez, the owner of the business. The organization expressed special thanks for her collaboration in preserving and disseminating this craft.
The councilor for the Primary Sector, María Calderín, emphasized that the events aim to "give visibility to the women who are and have been part of our primary sector, to learn about their experiences, and to bring to the public the enormous economic, social, and cultural value that their work represents."
For his part, the mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña, stressed the need to "recognize the work of so many women who for generations have contributed to the development of the countryside, to preserving our traditions, and to keeping our primary sector alive."
This year's commemoration coincides with the declaration of 2026 as the International Year of the Farmer by the FAO, dedicated to recognizing the work of women in agriculture and food production.
