Last August ranked as the tenth warmest August in the Canary Islands since 1961, with an average temperature of 24.2 degrees, as announced by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). This figure surpasses the historical average recorded in the archipelago for this month by 1.1 degrees, according to the latest Canary Islands Climatological Advance prepared by the agency.
Regarding precipitation, the month was classified as very humid, ranking twelfth in humidity within the historical series. An average of 2.4 liters per square meter was recorded, representing 114% of the expected value.
The month was marked by a warm spell between the 1st and 5th, which met the criteria for a heatwave. Following a second, less intense warm episode, temperatures dropped to values close to the reference average, remaining so until the end of the month.
Rainfall, although light in some mid-altitude areas of the northern slopes of Tenerife and on La Palma during mid-month, and only in El Hierro between the 5th and 7th, was mainly concentrated between the 26th and 28th due to the passage of a front. These significant precipitations affected the north of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro.
However, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and La Graciosa registered no precipitation during the month of August.
