The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) has reached an 81% occupancy rate for its new degree intake places, with nearly 4,000 students enrolled for the 2026/2027 academic year. The enrollment and place allocation process will remain open until October.
Degree programs in the Health Sciences area, including Medicine, Physiotherapy, and Nursing, with 475 places offered across Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote, have completely filled their vacancies. Degrees such as Physical Activity and Sports Sciences, Architecture, Marine Sciences, Computer Engineering, Early Childhood or Primary Education, Social Work, and the Double Degrees in English-German, English-French, and Early Childhood and Primary Education have also achieved 100% occupancy.
Recently implemented degrees, tailored to the needs and demands of the Canarian productive and social sectors, such as Data Science and Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, or Physical and Mathematical Engineering, have also filled their available spots. The new Psychology Degree, offered for the first time online, has reached 90% occupancy.
The rector of the ULPGC, Lluís Serra, emphasizes the growing demand and societal trust in the institution, but points out the need for adequate funding to expand offerings and meet the needs of Canarias. According to the university, the average cost of educating a student is 6,000 euros annually.
Serra warns that insufficient funding limits the capacity to increase places, leading to a loss of talent and forcing many students to seek other universities or be unable to access higher education due to financial constraints. Over 6,000 pre-enrolled students have not secured a place.
Following the fourth place allocation, the ULPGC has opened a period until August 31st for pre-enrollment confirmation to remain on waiting lists. On August 31st, a list of degree programs with available places will be published, and the deadline for modifying pre-enrollments will be from August 31st to September 2nd.
