A total of eleven Canary Islands wineries are participating in the inaugural edition of Winemad, a professional fair held at IFEMA Madrid, aiming to expand their business into ten international markets.

The Government of the Canary Islands, through the Canary Institute of Agri-food Quality (ICCA) and Proexca, has set up a 48-square-meter exhibition space at this event, running from May 27 to 29. The goal is to promote the archipelago's wines and generate commercial opportunities.
During the inauguration, the Minister of Agriculture, Narvay Quintero, accompanied by ICCA Director Luis Arráez Guadalupe, highlighted the event's importance for connecting with importers, distributors, and the Horeca channel. "It represents a great opportunity for Canary Islands companies to showcase the quality and uniqueness of their products on an international stage," he stated.
Winemad is expected to attract over 4,000 professional visitors and 200 international buyers, establishing itself as a key forum for strengthening the international presence of Canary Islands wines. The archipelago's wine exports reached 177,443 liters last year, with 74% destined for countries outside the European Union.
Key export markets include the United States (80,774 liters), Canada (10,592), China (4,154), and Japan (2,066). Other significant destinations are the United Kingdom (12,767), Switzerland (2,654), Germany (9,709), Belgium (7,269), France (5,714), and the Netherlands (4,281).
The participating wineries from Tenerife are Tafuriaste, La Haya, Viña Gómez, El Lomo, and Piedra Fluida. From Lanzarote, Los Bermejos, Casa Althay, Vulcano Lanzarote, and Erupción are attending. Finally, from La Palma, Teneguía and Veganorte are participating.
The fair also features the Wine Madrid Summit, a forum to analyze sector challenges and opportunities, with a focus on commercialization, sustainability, and competitiveness. Several Canary Islands companies will participate in panel discussions on wine tourism, gastronomy, and wine culture.
Minister Narvay Quintero emphasized that wine tourism was classified as a regulated tourist activity in January, granting it institutional recognition and legal security to diversify the primary sector and create economic opportunities.
