Thursday was particularly hot in the southern half and highlands of Gran Canaria, recording the highest temperatures of the current heatwave affecting the archipelago. According to data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), Tasarte, in La Aldea de San Nicolás, reached 40.6 degrees Celsius at 4:10 PM.
Other locations in the midlands of San Bartolomé de Tirajana also saw highs close to 40 degrees, with 39.9 degrees in Lomo Pedro Alfonso and 39.7 in Las Tirajanas. In the same area, El Matorral recorded 37.6 degrees. In the highlands, Tejeda marked a high of 33.6 degrees.
The heat was not only felt during the day, but nighttime lows were unusually high, making sleep difficult. Lomo Pedro Alfonso recorded the highest minimum temperature in the Canary Islands at 29.8 degrees. In Agüimes, the mercury did not drop below 29 degrees, and in Tejeda, the minimum was 28.7 degrees.
The previous night, between Wednesday and Thursday, was also tropical in several parts of the island, with minimums above 20 degrees in Tasarte (23), La Feria square in the capital (22.9), Valleseco, Maspalomas, and Melenara (22.8), and San Mateo (21.9).
For Friday, Aemet maintains a yellow alert for high temperatures between 11:00 AM and 8:00 PM for the east, south, west, and highlands of Gran Canaria, expecting maximums of 37 degrees, which could locally reach 39 degrees in the Tejeda basin and the southeastern and western midlands. Nights will remain warm, exceeding 26 degrees in these areas.
Additionally, the high temperature advisory is yellow for Fuerteventura, La Gomera, El Hierro, the highlands of La Palma, and the east, south, and west of Tenerife, including its metropolitan area. The alert for the risk of forest fires remains in effect for the four western islands and at altitudes above 400 meters in Gran Canaria.
