The 'San Mateo en Ruta: Intelligent Transport' project, promoted by the Canarian Government's Ministry of Mobility and the San Mateo City Council, has been recognized at the 6th International Mobility Awards for its impact on rural connectivity.

The initiative, which validated an effective on-demand transport model, was awarded in the small-medium municipality category at an event held in Madrid. This accolade highlights its relevance among more than a hundred sustainable mobility proposals.

"This recognition is tremendous news for the Canary Islands and opens a clear path to continue advancing a model that places citizens at the center of sustainable mobility."

The project has successfully connected rural and isolated areas, ensuring equal opportunities for their inhabitants in accessing essential services such as employment, training, and healthcare. The system is based on the use of taxis operating as buses, adapting to the reality of the midlands and peaks of the Canary Islands.
During its pilot period, which ran from October 2025 to April 2026, 'San Mateo en Ruta' registered 298 users and 1,049 journeys, with an average occupancy of two people per trip. These data confirm the usefulness of the service, which offers flexible transport with predefined stops, capable of reaching areas inaccessible to conventional transport.

"It not only improves accessibility for those without private vehicles but also reduces traffic pressure on main road corridors by promoting the use of public transport."

The project arose from a real need of residents in the most remote neighborhoods, facilitating their access to the urban center for errands, medical appointments, and their daily lives. The collaboration between the Ministry of Mobility, the San Mateo City Council, and the Nos Movemos Foundation has been key to the success of this initiative, which seeks to turn mobility into a tool for social cohesion.
