The municipality of La Frontera, on El Hierro island, will be the setting for the institutional opening ceremony of the 2026/27 school year in the Canary Islands. The Tigaday Children's and Primary Education Center (CEIP) will host the event next Wednesday, September 9th, as announced by the Minister of Education, Poli Suárez, in the Parliament of the Canary Islands.
The choice of this center is due to its pioneering role in implementing the complete first cycle of Early Childhood Education (0 to 3 years) in the archipelago. Suárez emphasized that CEIP Tigaday symbolizes the Government's commitment to families and equal opportunities, regardless of the island or municipality of residence.
The minister highlighted that the promotion of Early Childhood Education is transforming the Canary Islands, creating new opportunities for thousands of families and demonstrating that educational advancements can originate in the non-capital islands. The Ministry points out that, since the 2022-2023 academic year, the number of classrooms has increased from 34 with 593 places to 3,885 places distributed across 239 classrooms on all islands.
CEIP Tigaday, through collaboration between the Ministry and the La Frontera City Council, has experienced significant growth, increasing its student body from 246 to 324 between the 2023-2024 and the last academic year. Students in the 0-3 age group have been crucial to this increase, with 42 enrolled in 2023-2024 and over fifty in subsequent years.
Following the event in El Hierro, the school calendar will continue on September 10th for Compulsory Secondary Education, September 11th for Baccalaureate, and September 16th for Vocational Training and other special regime studies.
