The Fuerteventura Island Council Plenary has approved the Strategic Plan for the Management of Public Subsidies for Heritage 2026-2028, with an investment of nearly €1,186,540 over three years. The President of the Island Council, Lola García, emphasized the importance of consolidating and promoting the island's cultural richness and heritage, calling it “the essence that makes us unique”.
Through this plan, the Department of Cultural Heritage, led by Rayco León, promotes measures for the conservation and enhancement of the common legacy. The plan is structured into two strategic lines: the first focuses on protection and conservation through interventions and investment in Fuerteventura's cultural heritage, offering general subsidies to owners of properties declared BIC (Sites of Cultural Interest), cataloged, or of recognized cultural heritage interest. This line also includes agreements with the Diocese of the Canary Islands for €900,000 for conservation and protection actions on ecclesiastical property, as well as research in the conventual area of Betancuria.
The second strategic line is dedicated to the dissemination and promotion of heritage, fostering cultural activities through competitive subsidies to associations for cultural development and nominated subsidies to the associations Más Ruines que Caín, Asociación Juego del Palo Canario Maho, and Asociación Cultural El Efequén.
Furthermore, the Plenary approved the modification of the Strategic Plan for Subsidies of the Department of Informatics and New Technologies, headed by Carmen Alonso. The objective is to grant €123,000 to the Fuerteventura Chamber of Commerce for the development of the Business Incubator 4.0, which will establish an Insular Technological Innovation Area to boost innovation, digitalization, and business development in Fuerteventura.
Councilor Carmen Alonso explained that the constant changes in new technologies and emerging trends in management and administration require continuous updating of knowledge and skills. Therefore, this modification is proposed for a nominated subsidy to the Fuerteventura Chamber of Commerce.
