The Fuerteventura Island Council is executing the works for the Socio-sanitary Residence in Gran Tarajal at a good pace. This new facility will provide 90 socio-sanitary places and 12 family respite places to the island. The project, with an initial budget of 15.3 million euros, began in early 2026 and has a 12-month execution period, with completion anticipated in the first quarter of next year.
The residence is being built on a 4,701 square meter plot in the Valle del Aceitún. This complex will house two centers: the Socio-sanitary Residence with capacity for 60 places, operating 24/7, 365 days a year, and a Day Care Center for dependent elderly individuals with 30 places, in addition to the 12 family respite places.
The president of the Fuerteventura Island Council highlighted the institution's commitment to increasing socio-sanitary places, aiming for a total of 442 by 2026. Furthermore, coordination is underway for a Day Center in Costa Calma with 30 socio-sanitary places, and other resources in the Antigua-Betancuria area.
The Minister of Social Action, Víctor Alonso, stated that the facility will address the significant demand for socio-sanitary places in Fuerteventura and that the work is progressing as planned, aligning with a person-centered care model. The Gran Tarajal Socio-sanitary Residence is co-financed by the Fuerteventura Island Council with its own funds, as well as funds from the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Facility (MRR), channeled through the Ministry and the Government of the Canary Islands.
The mayor of Tuineje, David Herrera, welcomed the progress on this important project for the municipality and expressed gratitude for the inter-administrative coordination that made it a reality.
