The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has announced an investment of approximately 16 million euros between 2023 and 2026 for the improvement of the island's road network. These actions will allow for the rehabilitation of nearly 90 kilometers of roads, representing approximately 20% of the island's network.
The interventions, carried out through specific works contracts and integral conservation contracts, have focused on the rehabilitation of the road surface in various roads within the municipalities of Pájara, Tuineje, Antigua, Puerto del Rosario, La Oliva, and Betancuria. Both main corridors, such as the FV-2 connecting Puerto del Rosario with Morro Jable, and secondary roads have been improved.
The president of the Cabildo, Lola García, emphasized that improving roads is a priority to enhance the quality of life for residents and to adapt infrastructure to the island's growth. For his part, the insular councilor for Roads, Blas Acosta, highlighted that this investment progressively renews the network, acting on both main communication axes and local roads.
In May 2024, the Cabildo privatized the maintenance and conservation service for the 441.2 kilometers of the island's road network. This contract, with an initial duration of three years and a possibility of extension, amounts to 7,557,020.2 euros. The UTE Cororasa-Tecopsa is responsible for the north-central zone (3,570,115.59 euros), while the UTE OPC-Asfaltomeros manages the south-central zone (3,986,904.61 euros). These agreements provide human resources, machinery, and materials for road and conservation tasks.
