The initiative, presented within the framework of FECAI, aims to mitigate the economic and mobility barriers faced by families from islands such as Fuerteventura, La Gomera, Lanzarote, La Palma, and El Hierro. The goal is to ensure that place of residence does not hinder students from pursuing university or higher education studies in Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
The recently approved Law of Councils empowers these island corporations to promote housing infrastructure. This authority allows institutions to develop policies aimed at equal opportunities, responding to a long-standing demand from hundreds of young people who must relocate to study.
In addition to this strategy, the councils addressed other regional issues. Among them, they requested the Government of the Canary Islands to expedite the processing of island agreements, with the aim of formalizing them before the end of October.
Finally, FECAI agreed to demand that the Ministry of the Interior restart the SIVE works in northern Lanzarote. This infrastructure, stalled since 2023, is considered essential to improve surveillance and security along the archipelago's coasts.
