Nearly 300 senior citizens are participating in the 2026-2027 season of Neuromajo, a project by the Fuerteventura Island Council and the Neurolimpica Association, with the collaboration of six town councils and sponsors, to promote active aging.

Around 300 participants are competing in the 2026-2027 season of Neuromajo, an initiative driven by the Fuerteventura Island Council, through the Department of Social Action, in partnership with the Neurolimpica Association and the island's six town councils. This year, Padilla Supermercados Spar, Grupo Barceló, and Dany Sport have joined as collaborators to foster active aging among seniors.
The participating teams represent various municipalities: Las Elegidas e Imparables (Antigua), Virgen de la Peña (Betancuria), Las Guirre, Las Lobas, and La Tahona (La Oliva), L@s Atrevid@s, Cofete, Faro, Amigos de Pájara, Pájara se Mueve, and Playas de Pájara (Pájara), Las Apañás, Las Baifas, Maxopuerto, and Los Picarones (Puerto del Rosario), and Camellito and Las Moriscas (Tuineje).
Following the inaugural parade held on Friday, October 16th, in Caleta de Fuste (Antigua), the 18 competing teams gathered today at Playitas Sports Resort, in Tuineje, to compete in the qualifying round. The events included Relays, Canary Hoop, and Words and Numbers.
Both the insular president, Lola García, and the Minister of Social Action, Víctor Alonso, welcomed the nearly 300 participants, as well as the coaches. They congratulated the participants for their effort and dedication, and thanked all the individuals, town councils, and technical staff who make Neuromajo possible. Mayors and council members from all municipalities were also present. The Spanish Association Against Cancer participated with a symbolic act for World Breast Cancer Day.
Besay Rodríguez, part of the organization, expressed gratitude for "Fuerteventura's drive," stating, "As in previous editions, the island once again serves as the beacon illuminating the other islands."
The competition will continue tomorrow, Sunday, October 18th, with the Colors Figures test and the final rounds, where four teams will qualify for the regional final to be held in November in the municipality of Pájara, bringing together the best teams from the Archipelago.
As a novelty this year, the Race of Letters test was held outside the main competition weekend, covering all municipalities of Fuerteventura between October 32nd and 8th. Beyond the competition, the Neuromajo project aims to create an environment of coexistence, reinforce camaraderie, and promote active aging for seniors across the island.
