Fuerteventura's 36th Book Fair Celebrates Literature and Arts

The event, held from October 15-18 in Puerto del Rosario, will feature over twenty authors and various artistic disciplines.

The Palace of Training and Congresses Square in Fuerteventura will host the 36th edition of the Insular Book Fair from October 15-18, an event expanding its program to various arts.

The 36th Insular Book Fair of Fuerteventura will take place from October 15 to 18 at the Plaza del Palacio de Formación y Congresos in Fuerteventura. The event will feature more than twenty authors, including Carlos Bardem, Elena Medel, Ángeles González Sinde, Jorge Volpi, and Lorenzo Silva.
The president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Lola García, highlighted the fair's evolution into a first-class cultural festival, with literature as its core and open to other disciplines such as theater, music, dance, circus, and oral storytelling. Meanwhile, the Minister of Culture, Rayco León, emphasized this edition's theme, ‘Leer abre fronteras’ (Reading Opens Borders), underscoring literature's role in knowledge and social cohesion.
The program includes music, dance, and circus performances, as well as activities for families and schoolchildren. The island minister also acknowledged the contribution of local bookstores, Canarian publishers, and associations. The mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, thanked the Cabildo for its commitment and expressed the municipality's pride in being a cultural hub and meeting point for local and national authors. The City Council will participate with its own stand and a publication commemorating the centenary of the adhesion of Casillas del Ángel to the former Puerto Cabras.
Among the featured authors are Marta San Miguel, Jesús Carrasco, Margarita Yakovenko, Patricio Pron, Bibiana Candia, Óscar Liam, Binta Claire, José Naranjo, Cecilia Domínguez Luis, and journalist Jacobo García, winner of the Crónica de Anagrama 2026 award. Mexican author Jorge Volpi will participate in an encounter on Sunday the 18th, accompanied by Claudia Neira, director of the Centroamérica Cuenta Festival.
The fair will also serve as a showcase for island authors such as José Manuel de la Torre Montenegro, Aroa Suárez, Marcos Hormiga, Violeta Chacón, Francisco Rodríguez López, and Manoel Ferrás Rey. The Vice-Ministry of Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands will present new titles from the Biblioteca Básica Canaria catalog on Saturday the 17th, including one dedicated to the Fuerteventura author Josefina Plá.
New spaces for conversation and reflection are being introduced. The first encounter, ‘Leer abre fronteras’, will feature journalist Àngels Barceló and writer Ignacio Martínez de Pisón, moderated by Nicolás Castellano. The second dialogue will pair playwright Alberto Conejero with poet Javier Vicedo Alós.
Music will be present with the show Raíces by Strad & Cía on Thursday the 15th, followed by a performance by Mr Kilombo the next day. Performing arts will be showcased with dance, theater, and circus pieces. Mexican actress Cecilia Suárez will perform ‘El invencible verano de Liliana’, inspired by the novel by Cristina Rivera Garza. The company LaBú Teatre & Cris Clown will present ‘Triplette’ for family audiences, and Irene Maquieira will perform ‘Coser y cantar’.
Contemporary circus will be featured with ‘Tenet’ by Eunoia Colektiva, recognized with several awards, and ‘Sinergia Street’ by Nueveuno Circo. ‘Mahmud y no solo Mahmud’ by Punto Cero Company will address borders and immigration. Dance will be presented by Juancaballo, winner of the Max Award for Best Male Performer in 2026, Migro Danza & Yapadú Artística with ‘Padre Nuestro. Pasión y muerte de Federico García Lorca’, and the Fuerteventura company Mas Dance with ‘Entre líneas’.
Film, television, and theater actor Pedro Casablanc will close the fair with the recital ‘Bécquer y Quevedo. Amor y muerte’. The family program includes ‘La isla de las cosas perdidas’ by La Tendía, ‘El sueño de una noche de verano’ by El Retablo, and ‘Cuentos que canté… en la sábana africana’ by Ali Wakhanda, along with storytelling sessions and baby storytelling.
The Story Train will travel through the capital's streets, while the Literary Cabins, a project by Proyecto Cultura, will be installed in the Plaza del Palacio de Congresos. The fair will also feature bookstores and publishers, promoting reading and supporting the cultural and professional sector.
The Fair will extend to the Manuel Velázquez Cabrera Library in Gran Tarajal on Wednesday, October 14th, with the company Burka Teatro performing ¡VALIENTES! and the recital ‘El fulgor de lo efímero’, based on the poetic work of Alicia Llarena. It will also include storytelling sessions.
The Book Fair is organized by the Insular Library Center, under the Culture Department of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, with the collaboration of the Canarian Institute for Cultural Development of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Vice-Ministry of Social Welfare.
