A 50-year-old cyclist was rescued this morning in critical condition after suffering a fall and plunging into the bottom of a ravine in the municipality of Agüimes, on the island of Gran Canaria. The incident led to a significant deployment of emergency services.
The incident occurred in a ravine located next to the GC-550 road, specifically near kilometer marker 7. Shortly before 11:00 AM, the Emergency and Safety Coordination Center (CECOES) received an alert that a cyclist had gone off the road and fallen into the ravine.
A rescue operation was immediately activated, involving the Rescue and Emergency Group (GES) of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Canary Emergency Medical Service (SUC), the Firefighters of the Gran Canaria Emergency Consortium, the Local Police, and the Civil Guard.
SUC medical personnel reached the scene and managed to access the injured cyclist's position to perform an initial assessment and provide assistance at the fall site. The cyclist presented severe multiple traumas as a result of the impact.
Rescuers from the GES helicopter descended to the area and collaborated closely with medical personnel to hoist the injured cyclist using a crane. Subsequently, the aircraft evacuated him to a safe zone set up nearby.
In this safety area, the SUC's medical helicopter landed. Medics proceeded with the direct transfer of the patient due to the extreme severity of his condition. After stabilizing him medically, the injured man was transported by air ambulance to the Insular University Hospital of Gran Canaria.
Local Police and Consortium Firefighters secured the terrain to allow for the landing and takeoff of both helicopters. Additionally, the Civil Guard secured the perimeter of the operation and took charge of preparing the corresponding accident report.
