The volleyball team Guaguas is gearing up for the 2026-27 season with a strong intention to keep most of its key players, who were instrumental in the recent Superliga and Spanish Super Cup double. The only confirmed departure so far is that of the Cape Verdean middle blocker Helder Spencer, who will embark on a new professional chapter with Greek club Olympiacos. The player's tears during the title celebration underscored his emotional farewell.
To compensate for Spencer's significant absence, the sporting management, led by Juan Ruiz, is negotiating the high-profile return of Matt Knigge. The American player, who played for Berlin last season and faced Guaguas in the Champions League, is reportedly open to returning to what he considers his home. His signing would represent a major boost, given the excellent impression he left with his performance and professionalism during his previous tenure.
The potential return of Knigge, aged 30 and at the peak of his career, would create significant excitement and be a differentiating factor to complement players such as Walla, De Amo, Almansa, Nico Bruno, Martín Ramos, Colito, Larrañaga, and Juantorena.
Regarding the future of Cuban player Osmany Juantorena, following his impressive season, several rumors have emerged. Despite receiving more lucrative offers from other countries, his adaptation to Gran Canaria and his pivotal role in a championship-winning team may have convinced him to stay. The club president considers Juantorena a cornerstone and significant financial effort is being made to secure his contract extension.
There is moderate optimism regarding Juantorena's continuity, although prudence is being exercised until the agreement is officially finalized. The sporting management plans for two or three additional signings, but the Cuban's presence would be widely celebrated by his teammates.
