The island of Gran Canaria is hosting the historic visit of Pope Leo XIV, an unprecedented event in the archipelago. The pontiff began his schedule at Gando Air Base, where he received an official welcome from authorities including the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo.
The first official event took place at the Arguineguín pier, an emotional meeting with migrants. There, Pope Leo XIV delivered a speech focused on human dignity, the need for legal and safe migration routes, and condemnation of trafficking mafias. The pontiff called for reception based on humanity and policies that allow people to live with dignity in their home countries. The event included testimonies from migrants and volunteers, and was marked by a significant security operation.
Following his visit to Arguineguín, where he will be presented with the Golden Key of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria by the mayor Carolina Darias, the Pope will proceed to the Estadio de Gran Canaria to officiate a large mass. The day also features the presence of revered religious images such as the Virgen del Pino and the Santo Cristo de Telde.
The visit has necessitated a comprehensive security and mobility plan, with traffic closures in various areas of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and along the GC1. Numerous agents from the Guardia Civil and local police have been deployed, and public transport has been reinforced to facilitate access to the scheduled events.
The atmosphere on the island is one of great anticipation, with faithful gathered from early morning in locations such as the Cathedral of Santa Ana and Plaza del Stagno. The visit of Pope Leo XIV, which will last two days, represents a milestone for the Canary Islands.
