The online top-up system for transport passes in Gran Canaria, promised over a year ago, remains inoperative, forcing users to resort to physical locations to activate their travel documents.

The Unique Transport Authority of Gran Canaria (AUTGC) has acknowledged breaches by the awarded company, Electronic Trafic SA (ETRA), in the implementation of the online top-up and activation system for transport passes. The AUTGC manager, Ruyman Santana, described the situation as "unacceptable".
The contract, awarded in January 2024 for 24.5 million euros, stipulated the complete installation of the technology within six months, a deadline that expired in August 2024 without fulfillment. Detected issues include failures in bus geolocation, errors on vehicle information panels, and primarily, difficulties with online pass activation, as the new system has only been installed on 145 out of the island's 725 buses.
The AUTGC, an entity dependent on the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, took over the management of the Resident, Youth, and Gold passes in March 2025. Despite successive extensions granted to the concessionaire, the latest until May 31st, the situation persists. Terminating the contract also presents complexities, as it would involve dismantling already installed systems and reverting to older technologies.
