The Platform in Defense of Public Universities of the Canary Islands (UUPP Canarias) has launched a citizen initiative seeking to ensure the financial stability of these institutions. The manifesto, presented on Tuesday, calls for compliance with the Organic Law of the University System (LOSU) and the allocation of at least 1% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to public higher education.
The main objective is to consolidate the university's role as a fundamental «social elevator» and a guarantor of equal opportunities. The proposal arises in a context of constant demands for resources from universities to the regional Government, with the approval of a multi-year funding program contract still pending.
“"We are making many efforts but we need guarantees in the economic and financial sense."
University representatives, including the rectors of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) and the University of La Laguna (ULL), highlighted the «urgent need» for adequate funds to address challenges such as adapting academic offerings to new market demands and expanding micro-credentials. It was noted that current funding is significantly below regulatory requirements.
The manifesto also emphasizes the importance of strengthening academic autonomy and freedom, arguing that «a well-funded university is an independent university». It warns that a lack of resources not only weakens higher education but also compromises social development and the university's ability to effectively serve society.
Various academic and social figures have expressed their support for the initiative, emphasizing the strategic role of universities as an investment that generates essential knowledge for the management and progress of the Canary Islands. The initiative aims to collect 5,000 signatures of support, having already surpassed 700.
