The Spanish labor calendar includes a new holiday at the beginning of September 2026. September 8 has been designated an island-wide holiday in Gran Canaria in honor of the Virgen del Pino. This day will allow many workers to extend their break after the summer holidays.
As confirmed by the Official State Gazette (BOE), the holiday will fall on a Tuesday. This creates the possibility of a four-day consecutive rest period, from Saturday, September 5, to Tuesday, September 8, for those who can request Monday, September 7, as a vacation day.
It is important to note that this holiday is island-specific and will only apply to Gran Canaria. Residents on other Canary Islands, such as Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and La Graciosa, must consult their respective labor calendars, as it will not be a holiday for them due to this celebration.
The celebration of the Virgen del Pino, patron saint of the Diocese of Canarias, is the reason for this non-working day on the island. The date is part of the official calendar of island-level labor holidays for the Canary Islands in 2026.
September 8 will also be a holiday in other autonomous communities in Spain, such as Asturias (Day of Asturias and Our Lady of Covadonga) and Extremadura (Day of Extremadura and the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe), as well as in various municipalities across the country with local holidays approved by their city councils.
The labor calendar establishes a maximum of 14 holidays per year, combining national, regional, and local holidays. These days are generally paid and non-recoverable. Therefore, workers are advised to always verify which calendar applies to them to properly plan their breaks.
