A Guardia Civil operation in the waters south of Gran Canaria has resulted in the seizure of a significant cocaine shipment. In total, 139 bales weighing 3,360 kilograms of the narcotic substance were intercepted.
The vessel, a semi-rigid drug boat equipped with several high-power engines, was detected navigating approximately 70 miles south of the island. After being identified as being linked to drug trafficking, it attempted to flee upon being signaled by officers from the Maritime Service.
The swift action of the Guardia Civil officers led to a pursuit that, despite the boat's evasive maneuvers, was successful. The five occupants on board were arrested.
During the operation, two long firearms were seized: an assault rifle and a light machine gun, which the detainees used for protection against potential assaults by other organized groups. Possession of such weapons is prohibited for private individuals.
The arrestees, aged between 21 and 41, have been handed over to judicial authorities. They face charges related to public health offenses for drug trafficking, serious disobedience, illegal possession of weapons, and membership in a criminal organization.
