On the occasion of International Ostomy Patient Day, the Insular-Maternal and Child University Hospital Complex has organized an event for patients and their families. The ostomy consultation at this center, part of the Canary Islands Government's Health Department, has provided care to over 1,500 patients since its establishment in 2016.
A notable increase in new patient care has been observed, reaching 241 so far in 2026. This rise is attributed to both the management of new stomas and the introduction of new care services, including training in self-care for nephrostomies and instruction in continence and irrigation techniques.
The consultation has become an essential comprehensive care resource, focused on improving the quality of life for individuals with ostomies through humanized attention. It serves as a safe space for training, support, and addressing concerns, aiming to foster autonomy in daily care and provide necessary emotional support.
“"An ostomy represents a significant life change for the patient. Therefore, our consultation not only aims to resolve doubts and complications but also to accompany the person throughout their process, providing them with the necessary tools and security to regain their daily life with full normality and dignity."
The commemorative event will take place tomorrow, Friday, October 2nd.
