On the occasion of the upcoming apostolic journey of Pope Leo XIV to the Canary Islands on June 11 and 12, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has developed a comprehensive plan to regulate and monitor traffic. The aim is to mitigate traffic disruptions arising from the significant security measures planned for the visit.
The DGT urges the public to avoid non-essential travel during these days and recommends that companies facilitate teleworking. Those wishing to attend scheduled events should plan their journeys in advance, prioritizing the use of public transport or designated parking areas.
General restrictions will be imposed on freight vehicles exceeding 7,500 kilograms of maximum authorized mass in specific sections and periods, with exemptions for emergency vehicles, road assistance, and special vehicles with authorization for urgent tasks. The circulation of dangerous goods vehicles will also be prohibited, although special authorizations are available for essential supplies such as fuel to ports and airports, or gases for healthcare facilities.
Furthermore, the suspension of road works affecting the traffic platform in Gran Canaria and Tenerife will be requested during the papal visit days. Traffic regulation and management measures, including dynamic closures and ramp closures on main roads such as the GC-1, GC-3, GC-31 in Gran Canaria, and the TF-24, TF-5, TF-13, and TF-152 in Tenerife, may be modified based on developments and traffic conditions.
The DGT will keep the public informed in real-time through its website (www.dgt.es), social media (@DGTes and @informacionDGT), radio bulletins, and the telephone number 011, providing information on traffic status and alternative routes.
Specifically, on June 12, the right lane of the TF-4 road in Tenerife will be closed to traffic for use as a parking area for authorized buses between 06:00 and 18:00 hours.
