The initiative includes the establishment of the Island Silbo Gomero Classrooms, the offering of introductory courses in the Archipelago, and the organization of various cultural and educational activities. To implement this program, the Cabildo has allocated 121,000 euros to support the educational, cultural, and dissemination actions promoted by the Association.
The president of the Cabildo, Casimiro Curbelo, highlighted that this agreement will allow for the continuity of preservation efforts for Silbo Gomero and, crucially, foster its learning and transmission among different generations. He emphasized that teaching is a fundamental tool for keeping this heritage alive and ensuring its continued presence in the cultural and social reality of La Gomera.
Curbelo also noted that the project combines training with dissemination and promotion, aiming for Silbo Gomero to reach more people, both on the island and throughout Canarias. The collaboration with the Silbo Gomero Cultural Association will facilitate the organization of year-round activities specifically focused on its knowledge, practice, and spread.
This agreement aligns with the shared objective of both entities to defend, promote, and disseminate Silbo Gomero as an identity-defining cultural manifestation of the Gomero people. Key areas of the project will include the development of the Island Silbo Gomero Classrooms, alongside the organization of introductory courses in the Archipelago. These actions will be complemented by a promotion program that may include courses, seminars, workshops, exhibitions, and conferences.
The program will maintain a continuous line of action across three complementary areas: the teaching of Silbo Gomero, its cultural promotion, and the dissemination of its heritage values, with the goal of fostering its social knowledge and transmission.
