The piece, titled ‘The Ships of Discovery’, represents the three vessels that, under the command of Christopher Columbus, called at the port of San Sebastián de La Gomera before their voyage to the New World. This initiative aims to enhance the island's cultural and tourist offerings, consolidating the Columbus Route as a key element of its historical and public heritage.
The first vice-president and insular minister of Heritage, Adasat Reyes, explained that the monument is part of the Columbus Route project, which seeks to highlight the sites, episodes, and symbols related to Columbus's stay in the Gomera capital. The sculpture is conceived as a measure to enrich the historical and maritime journey, underscoring La Gomera's importance in Atlantic history.
The work also pays tribute to the sailors of the expedition and is located in a strategic roundabout adjacent to the Municipal Market of San Sebastián de La Gomera, a main access point to the historic center. This location ensures high visibility and integration into the town's heritage route.
The funding for this project comes from European Next Generation EU funds, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, focused on modernizing the tourism sector and its transition towards sustainability.
