The initiative, promoted by the Canary Islands Department of Universities, Science, Innovation, and Culture through the Canary Agency for Research, Innovation, and Information Society (ACIISI), had the collaboration of the La Gomera Island Council and the San Sebastián de La Gomera City Council. The event aimed to highlight science and technology as the Archipelago's heritage.
During the day, students from 3rd grade of Primary to 2nd grade of ESO participated in practical workshops exploring how innovation provides real solutions to the islands' challenges. In the afternoon, the fair opened its doors to the general public with activities like 'La Baticleta', which combines exercise, sustainability, and juice making with local products.
Attendees delved into technology, robotics, and programming with Arduino, Edison robotics, and sustainable 3D printing from Makercan. Aerospace engineering and telecommunications were represented by the TEIDESAT team, the Canary Association of Telecommunication Engineers (ACIT), and Robotdrónica, which presented a spherical drone football match.
Sustainability, biotechnology, and the blue economy were addressed through workshops by the Canary Institute of Agrarian Research (ICIA) on converting fruit waste into useful resources and creating musical instruments for the circular economy. The Canary Maritime Cluster introduced maritime professions.
In health, applied science, and humanities, participants acted as researchers with the University Institute of Tropical Diseases (IUETSPC), analyzing pathogens and water quality. The ULPGC explored the history of time measurement, and the theatrical activity 'Tic Tac-Crea' made the Canary Science Law accessible.
Innovation is a new heritage of the archipelago.
Minister Migdalia Machín emphasized the importance of democratizing access to knowledge. The president of the Island Council, Casimiro Curbelo, expressed his satisfaction in bringing the Mini-Fair to La Gomera for the second time, and the mayor, Angélica Padilla, noted that the workshops showcase Canarian talent.
The next editions of the Mini-Fair will be held in La Palma (May 21) and Fuerteventura (May 26). These activities are part of the Canary Islands Month, which promotes the recognition of the archipelago's identity and traditions.
