During the event, Curbelo advocated for institutional cooperation to guarantee equal rights across all islands and thanked FECAM for the distinction, as well as for the citizen support received over more than four decades. He recalled his beginnings in 1983 as mayor of San Sebastián de La Gomera and his subsequent representation of the island in the Cabildo, the Parliament of the Canary Islands, and the Senate.
"Our priority is the citizens," stated Curbelo, who highlighted the vocation of service and dedication as guiding principles for public representatives. He called for responsibility to foster agreements and avoid confrontation in a polarized context, appealing for dialogue, consensus, and common sense from the local to the national level.
Furthermore, the president from La Gomera emphasized the importance of quality public services and equal opportunities. He noted that the archipelago's condition requires overcoming maritime barriers to ensure the same rights for all citizens, regardless of their island or municipality of residence.
To advance towards this goal, Curbelo stressed the need to strengthen collaboration between town councils and island councils, stating that "town councils and island councils have the duty to join forces, and we are on that path."
