The activity, taking place in the main hall of the hospital in collaboration with the Canary Islands Ostomy Association (AOCAN), aims to raise awareness about the reality of ostomized people, provide information to patients, families, and the public, and contribute to normalizing their daily lives.
Healthcare professionals and AOCAN representatives will address concerns regarding care, adaptation to ostomy, and resources available through the Canary Islands Health Service. The Complex Wounds and Ostomy Nursing consultation treated approximately 50 ostomized patients last year and currently monitors about a hundred, with an average of 265 annual consultations.
Since 2025, the service has evolved towards a specialized monographic care model, directly intervening in 25 patients and providing follow-up for fifteen more operated on in Tenerife.
The awareness event seeks to highlight the needs of ostomized individuals, foster social understanding, and value the specialized care provided. It also aims to promote autonomy and facilitate adaptation after surgery.
The consultation offers care from the preoperative period, including stoma marking, through hospitalization and post-discharge follow-up, monitoring patient adaptation and ensuring continuity of care to improve autonomy and quality of life.
Furthermore, the hospital now features an adapted bathroom for ostomized individuals in one of its main entrances, facilitating the emptying and changing of collection bags with accessibility, comfort, hygiene, and privacy.
