The planning process, named La Siberia – La Palma, began in Herrera del Duque (Badajoz) with the opening of the III Spanish Congress of Biosphere Reserves. This event, which brings together managers and scientists from the 55 Spanish reserves until September 24th, serves as a prelude to the final approval of the framework document for the 2026-2035 period.
The strategic plan aims to adapt the agreements reached at the V World Congress of Biosphere Reserves in Hangzhou (China) to the national context. The proposal focuses on a fair eco-social transition and the role of reserves as spaces for experimentation in the face of current biophysical limits.
During the congress, the La Palma World Biosphere Reserve presented its management model following the 2021 volcanic eruption. The institution showcased the execution of a 15-million-euro grant, which allowed for the processing of 119 files and the awarding of 114 projects across the island's fourteen municipalities, with a significant impact on local employment.
La Palma shares with the rest of the Network an experience that connects directly with the need to provide Biosphere Reserves with sufficient technical, financial, and institutional capacities to face the next decade.
