Mariano H. Zapata, Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Canary Islands Government, visited the works carried out in San Andrés y Sauces to finalize the closure of the electrical distribution grid ring between Las Lomadas and San Andrés. This intervention aims to strengthen supply security and optimize response capacity for potential incidents.
The project, executed by Endesa with an investment of €550,000, involved the installation of 1,620 meters of new medium-voltage underground line. This action frees the grid from relying on a single power source in this section, providing an alternative that allows for faster service restoration during outages and facilitates maintenance tasks.
Zapata highlighted that this improvement benefits over 2,400 customers and complements other grid modernization efforts in La Palma, such as the ring closure in Tazacorte. He emphasized the importance of these actions for ensuring the reliability and security of the island's electricity supply, stressing that grid robustness is as vital as energy generation.
Also present at the visit were the Director General of Energy, Alberto Hernández Suárez; the Mayor of San Andrés y Sauces, Francisco Javier Paz Expósito; and Endesa's representative in La Palma, Fernando Capote. The Mayor underscored the significance of these improvements for the island's development, benefiting both residents and businesses.
The intervention, developed over five months, has connected 13 transformation centers. The new 20 kV underground line has renovated and modernized two key transformation centers in the Las Lomadas and San Andrés area. The Directorate General of Energy oversees these actions, which are part of a broader plan of ring closures in the Canary Islands executed by e-distribución.
In recent years, La Palma has received over €11 million in investments for distribution networks, according to 2026 data from e-distribución, largely linked to recovery efforts following the Tajogaite volcano eruption.
