The project “Plan for the tidying and improvement of the rural landscape”, coordinated by the Northern Mancomunidad of Gran Canaria, is underway to recover and enhance the region's rural scenery. The initiative focuses on cleaning, sorting, separating, collecting, and managing waste from abandoned agricultural plots and greenhouses.
Seven priority plots have been identified in the municipalities of Gáldar and La Aldea de San Nicolás. The project, which began on June 16, involves a team of 13 workers trained in occupational risk prevention and waste management. Field work commenced on July 6.
In August, work concluded in Gáldar, where three greenhouse plots covering 2.33 hectares were addressed. The cleanup yielded 6.26 tons of plastics (nets and irrigation hoses), 1.41 tons of wires and rods, and 136 kilograms of mixed urban-like waste.
In addition to waste removal, pruning and removal of large spontaneous vegetation were carried out. Banana plant and grassy plant remains were left on the ground as natural mulch to protect the soil from erosion.
Following the work in Gáldar, the project moves to La Aldea de San Nicolás, where activities will continue until December, aiming to clear a total of 9 hectares.
The project has a budget of 200,000 euros, fully funded by the Department of Employment and Local Development of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, as part of the Agreement for the Coordination and Execution of Active Employment Policies Programs for Gran Canaria, signed with the Canary Islands Employment Service. A new plan for 2027 has also been announced.
