The Avenida Bulevar Primero de Mayo in Puerto del Rosario has partially opened its new pedestrian zone after the completion of renovation works. The project, executed by the City Council, received funding of 1.28 million euros from the Ministry of Tourism and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, representing over 42% of the total project cost, which exceeds three million euros.
The intervention has transformed this main artery of the Fuerteventura capital by reorganizing the roadway and expanding pedestrian areas to improve accessibility. The pavement has been renewed, and new shaded areas and urban furniture have been incorporated. The works focused on the section between the Ciudad Jardín roundabout and the intersection with León y Castillo street.
The Minister of Tourism and Employment, Jéssica de León, highlighted that the project enhances mobility for tourists and residents, recovers deteriorated spaces, and facilitates the enjoyment of the coastal landscape and urban environment from an elevated position.
The visit also included the president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García; the mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera; the Director General of Infrastructure, Sustainability, and Tourist Quality, Héctor Mateo; the CEO of Gesprotur, Ignacio Solana; the Councilor for Works of the City Council of Puerto del Rosario, Ana Hernández; and the Councilor for Tourism, Rosa Rodríguez.
Mayor David de Vera positively assessed the opening, stating that the renovation represents a significant improvement for the city, with new pedestrian spaces, modernized accessibility, and a more contemporary and functional urban image. He thanked residents and merchants for their patience during the works and noted that efforts continue to restore vehicle circulation once final reception is formalized after completing signage and other pending details.
Director General Héctor Mateo explained that the avenue will maintain two-way traffic circulation from the Ciudad Jardín roundabout to the intersection with La Cruz street, while from that point to León y Castillo, traffic will be one-way.
In addition to this avenue, the Ministry of Tourism and Employment will collaborate on the recovery and improvement of the Plaza de España, an emblematic space in the city center. This collaboration will be formalized through the public company Gestión de Proyectos Turísticos de Canarias (Gesprotur).
Both administrations reaffirmed their commitment to continue collaborating on new projects for the capital of Fuerteventura, including the drafting of projects for the Paseo del Charco, Las Salinas beach, and the renovation of the Plaza de la Residencia de los Militares.
