The Gran Canaria municipality of Tejeda is taking a step forward in security and surveillance with the acquisition of two drones. This initiative, supported by the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, will include a specific training program for the Local Police officers and Civil Protection members of the municipality.
According to Mayor Francisco Perera, this technology has become "almost essential in current times." The drones will be highly useful for monitoring large public events, such as the Fiestas del Almendro en Flor (Almond Blossom Festival), where private units were previously used due to the concentration of people.
Furthermore, the unmanned aircraft will enable a faster and more effective response to emergency calls, particularly for accidents on hiking trails leading to Roque Nublo. Tejeda's rugged terrain, with ravines and mountains, complicates rescue operations, so the drones will facilitate situation assessment and coordination of emergency teams.
The project encompasses research and development activities, covering police surveillance, citizen security, ordinance control, and rescue assistance, aiming to improve municipal efficiency and the occupational safety of security forces.
The acquired equipment includes two aircraft units with integrated RTK modules, smart flight batteries, protectors, and propellers. The training program, for eight students, will cover both theory and practice, necessary for obtaining European STS-01/02 certificates. The contract, awarded to Atyges Ingeniería for 17,389 euros, includes damage insurance for the first 12 months, guaranteeing repair or replacement of the equipment in case of accidental damage.
With this acquisition, Tejeda joins other municipalities in Gran Canaria that are already using drones to strengthen their police and surveillance efforts.
