The president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García, conveyed this decision to representatives of the island's three guilds (Corralejo, Morro Jable, and Gran Tarajal). The meeting also included the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, Enrique Pérez, and the Minister of Finance and Economic Promotion, Nuria Cabrera.
This initiative represents an increase of 20,000 euros for each existing agreement, distributing the total of 120,000 euros among the three entities. According to the insular president, this boost aims to help professionals cope with high fuel expenses, a recurring request from the guilds.
Lola García highlighted the crucial role of the primary sector and artisanal fishing in Fuerteventura's economy, noting the inherent limitations due to double insularity and its status as an outermost region, further exacerbated by the current international crisis.
For his part, Minister Enrique Pérez stressed the importance of reinforcing the resilience of the primary sector, considered a traditional industry and part of the island's identity, to confront the difficulties in fishing caused by rising fuel costs.
Both García and Pérez also referred to a 5-million-euro emergency plan initiated by the Cabildo to ensure the competitiveness of agricultural, livestock, and fishing activities, through general aid calls, specific grants, and agricultural water subsidies.
