The Ordinary Plenary Session of the San Sebastián de La Gomera City Council, held this Thursday, September 3, unanimously approved three initiatives aimed at defending the agriculture, livestock, and artisanal fishing of the islands. These motions, sent by the Canarian Federation of Municipalities (FECAM), seek to support the primary sector of the Canary Islands.
The mayor of San Sebastián de La Gomera, Angélica Padilla, noted that the motions originate from initiatives by the municipalities of Santa María de Guía, Gáldar, and Puerto del Rosario. Padilla, a member of the FECAM Rural Commission, reaffirmed the City Council's commitment to the primary sector and the defense of the Archipelago's particularities, supporting measures to ensure its future viability.
The initiatives address the need to guarantee fair prices and dignified conditions for agricultural and livestock products, as well as the defense of small holdings against the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur. They request the incorporation of safeguard clauses, effective controls, and sufficient economic compensation to prevent unfair competition.
Furthermore, the Plenary unanimously supported the artisanal fishing sector in light of the new European fishing control regulations, expressing concern over obligations that could be disproportionate for artisanal fishing in the Canary Islands, such as advance notification of port entry or electronic logbooks.
In other matters, collaboration agreements were approved with the Cabildo de La Gomera for the Patron Saint and Carnival Festivities of 2026, and for the promotion of crafts.
Mayor Angélica Padilla issued a statement of support and solidarity with the citizens of Ceuta, highlighting its example of respect, coexistence, and diversity. She expressed institutional support for the people of Ceuta and recognition for those working to preserve coexistence and meet the population's needs.
Padilla emphasized the importance of maintaining a serene and supportive attitude, respecting human rights and attending to the most vulnerable. She conveyed the closeness, affection, and solidarity of San Sebastián de La Gomera towards Ceuta, recalling the value of solidarity between territories, especially in the face of the migratory crisis.
