The Ayuntamiento de San Sebastián de La Gomera, through the Department of Social Policies and Equality and with the collaboration of the Cabildo de La Gomera, organized the third Senior Autumn Gathering. The event, part of the Month of Seniors, took place in the Las Nieves recreational area, aiming to foster community, social relationships, and recognize the contribution of seniors to the municipality.
The mayor, Angélica Padilla, highlighted the consolidation of this annual celebration as an opportunity to honor a generation fundamental to the community, essential in preserving traditions and transmitting values. She emphasized the special mention given to Carmita Navarro Hernández, recognized for her example of inclusion and personal autonomy despite a visual disability, having led a full working life and participated in musical groups and cultural activities.
Casimiro Curbelo, president of the Cabildo de La Gomera, stressed the importance of addressing the diverse realities of seniors, linking well-being with autonomy, security, and living in their own environment. He highlighted the role of families, friends, and the community in preventing unwanted loneliness, especially in a territory with the unique characteristics of La Gomera, emphasizing the importance of maintaining connections and having opportunities to socialize.
The councilor for Social Policies and Equality, Ana Campoy, stated that this edition is part of the initiatives for the Month of Seniors to promote active aging and participation. The day featured musical performances by Irinea Niebla, Mariachi Aluce, and José Jiménez.
