The plenary session of the Santa Lucía de Tirajana City Council, scheduled for Thursday, is poised to reflect the severe political crisis gripping the municipality. The session will be dominated by allegations from six councilors, formerly of Primero Canarias and the mayor, against the administrative procedure seeking to declare them non-affiliated. This is compounded by a complex series of recusals that could disqualify 11 members of the corporation during a key debate.
The councilors who left the NC party have formally submitted their allegations, arguing for the "radical nullity" of the proceedings and a violation of fundamental political representation rights. Their defense focuses on questioning the validity of the National Political Council's resolution, allegedly made on March 14, 2026, which declared them 'tránsfugas' (defectors), noting that the minutes of that session were not yet approved and were merely a "draft" subject to modification.
The most unusual moment is anticipated during the debate on the recusal filed against the mayor, Francisco García, by NC councilor Leví Ramos. The request is based on the mayor's supposed "personal interest" in the conflict arising from the exclusion of the expelled councilors' situation from the March plenary. The Secretary's report confirms that the mayor will not be able to participate or vote on this item, with the first deputy mayor taking his place.
The mandatory abstentions will extend to eight other councilors who ran on the NC lists, as they are deemed to have a direct interest in the matter. They are joined by PP-AV councilor Eva Lucía Araña, who has filed three administrative lawsuits related to this political dispute. Furthermore, Mayor García himself has recused PP-AV councilor Juan José Ramos due to ongoing judicial complaints, further escalating the political and legal tension.
Consequently, only representatives from PSOE, Fortaleza, Vox, Unidos por Gran Canaria, and the non-affiliated councilor José Moreno, totaling 14 votes, will be able to participate in the vote. Should the recusal against Francisco García succeed, all decisions made by the mayor in recent plenaries concerning the declaration of non-affiliated members, including the selection of the report from the Government of the Canary Islands over the one prepared by the secretary, could be invalidated.
