Heat and dust herald return to school in Gran Canaria

The return to classrooms and work in Gran Canaria begins this Monday, September 14, under a scenario of intense heat and dust, especially in the south and southeast of the island.

The south and southeast of Gran Canaria face the start of the week with temperatures that could locally reach 37 ºC this Tuesday, according to forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). This heat episode, accompanied by dust, will last until Wednesday, giving way to a sharp temperature drop and a significant increase in the probability of precipitation between Thursday and Saturday.
The Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Emergencies, has activated a pre-alert for maximum temperatures throughout the Archipelago since this Monday. The dust also maintains a pre-alert in effect since midnight, affecting all islands with unfavorable or very unfavorable air quality, especially in the low-lying areas of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and with high concentrations in the midlands and peaks of Gran Canaria and La Palma. Potential health problems for people with chronic or respiratory diseases are warned.
Municipal forecasts detail the intensity of the heat in municipalities such as San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Agüimes, and Mogán. In Santa Lucía de Tirajana, highs of 37 ºC are expected on Monday and 38 ºC on Tuesday, with lows of 28 ºC. The drop will begin on Wednesday, with highs settling at 27 ºC by Friday.
From Wednesday, a transition will begin, with a generalized temperature decrease and the progressive withdrawal of dust. On Thursday, the change will be more evident with continued temperature drops and the possibility of weak and occasional rainfall in the north and interior areas. The probability of rain will skyrocket in municipalities like San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Santa Lucía de Tirajana, reaching 100% on Friday.
The warm spell will also affect the rest of the Archipelago, with maximum temperatures forecast of up to 37 ºC in Fuerteventura and 36 ºC in Lanzarote. In Tenerife, highs of up to 35 ºC are expected in the southern midlands and up to 36 ºC in the metropolitan area on Tuesday. The General Directorate of Emergencies urges the public to follow self-protection advice.
