The San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council has ordered the temporary closure of the Plaza Maspalomas shopping center, located in Playa del Inglés, due to repeated non-compliance with fire safety regulations.

The Local Police enforced the municipal decision this Friday, placing closure tapes at the entrance to the complex. Although the shopping center has experienced some decline in recent years with many shops closed, it remains part of the collective memory for thousands of young people from Gran Canaria, even being mentioned in songs by artist Quevedo.
The order affects the entire property, excluding independent premises and the above-ground plaza. All public-facing activities must cease in the rest of the building, including the lower-level entertainment venues, until the detected deficiencies are rectified.
The municipal decree also urges the property owners' association to immediately undertake the necessary actions to ensure the safety of people and property within the building, which was constructed in 1988.
This closure follows an inspection on May 27, 2026. During the visit, technicians and the Local Police confirmed that while fire extinguishers had been checked and evacuation routes cleared, other serious issues persisted. These included inadequate compartmentation of ducts, doors, and windows, as well as evacuation signage directing users to currently blocked or sealed exits, such as the building's garage.
