Gran Canaria island has been the most affected by the heatwave, with readings reaching 39.7 degrees in Tunte (San Bartolomé de Tirajana) at midday. Other municipalities such as Lomo de Pedro Alfonso (San Bartolomé de Tirajana) reached 39.2 degrees, Tasarte (La Aldea de San Nicolás) 37.9 degrees, and Agüimes 37.3 degrees.
The high daytime temperatures have been accompanied by tropical nights across almost the entire archipelago, with minimums not dropping below 20 degrees. In locations like Cuevas del Pinar (28.5 degrees), Tejeda (28.7 degrees), and Tunte (28.2 degrees), equatorial nights were recorded, exceeding 25 degrees.
The Government of the Canary Islands, island councils (cabildos), and city councils maintain alerts for extreme temperatures and wildfire risk. The president of the Gran Canaria Island Council has urged the public to exercise extreme caution regarding the forest environment, avoiding machinery that could cause sparks and adhering to current prohibitions. Self-care and maintaining a 15-meter clearance around homes and infrastructure in rural areas are also recommended.
For Friday, Aemet forecasts that the orange alert for temperatures that may reach or exceed 39 degrees will be in effect in the mountains, east, south, and west of Gran Canaria between eleven in the morning and seven in the evening. Nighttime temperatures will remain significantly high, above 26 degrees.
Other islands such as Fuerteventura, as well as large parts of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro, will remain on yellow alert with temperatures around 34 degrees. Additionally, Saharan dust (calima) at altitude and moderate northeasterly winds are expected, with potential strong gusts in the southeast and northwest slopes of the mountainous islands.
Regarding sea conditions, moderate to rough seas are expected, locally very rough in the Anaga-Agaete channel, with a swell of up to two meters north of the channel. On the Gran Canaria coast, seas will be moderate to rough, with a swell of 1 to 2 meters, advising caution along the coastline.
