The Yaiza City Council has demanded a decisive response from the Lanzarote Cabildo regarding several matters of significant importance to the municipality. These issues have been repeatedly raised over recent months without a coordinating meeting being scheduled. Mayor Óscar Noda recalled that the council first requested a working meeting on July 2nd to discuss the Modernization, Improvement, and Competitiveness Enhancement Plan for Playa Blanca, along with pending matters related to island and municipal planning.
Due to the lack of response, Yaiza reiterated its request on August 18th. Subsequently, Mayor Óscar Noda personally conveyed the request to the president of the insular Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, on September 8th, during his visit for the main day of the Los Remedios festivities. Despite this, the City Council has registered a third formal request addressed to both the Presidency of the Cabildo and the Territorial Policy Department.
“We have been trying since July 2nd to sit down with the Cabildo to discuss issues that affect the present and future of Playa Blanca and the entire municipality. We have reiterated the request in writing, adapted to any date and format, and we are still awaiting a response,” stated Óscar Noda.
The City Council has expressed its full availability to hold the meeting, either in person or remotely, and considers the participation of technicians and legal experts from the island departments of Territorial Policy and Tourism Activity essential. Yaiza would be represented by the mayor, technicians from the Urban Planning Department, and municipal legal staff. Noda affirmed: “We are not asking for any special treatment. We are requesting institutional coordination, a capacity for work, loyalty, and respect towards a municipality that needs to move forward. Silence and lack of response cannot become the usual way of interacting with Yaiza”.
Furthermore, the City Council today reiterated its request to the Directorate General of Coasts and Management of the Canary Islands Maritime Space for a meeting to analyze the modernization project for the pavement and furniture of the Avenida Marítima in Playa Blanca. Yaiza deems it essential to coordinate this action to improve one of the busiest public spaces in Lanzarote's main tourist hub. The document notes that a meeting had been previously requested without a response and again offers the possibility of holding it in person or via video conference.
“Playa Blanca needs the involved administrations to attend to projects affecting its image, services, and tourist competitiveness. The City Council is doing its part, presenting proposals and requesting meetings, but we need dialogue and decisions from the other administrations,” pointed out Noda.
Regarding unfinished works in El Golfo, the City Council has sent separate letters to the Presidency of the Cabildo and the Water Consortium of Lanzarote requesting the completion and conditioning of roads affected by sanitation works. This request follows complaints from residents about the state of some dirt roads after the work concluded, complaints that had already been communicated by phone to the manager of the Water Consortium.
The City Council requests the leveling and smoothing of the roads, irrigation, and the application of a compaction system to improve the surface and facilitate vehicle and resident transit. Óscar Noda stated: “When an administration carries out work, it also has the obligation to leave the affected areas in adequate condition. The residents of El Golfo should not have to bear the consequences of work that has not been properly completed.”
The mayor insisted that the City Council will continue to demand solutions: “Yaiza fulfills its duties, proposes projects, and defends the needs of its towns. We expect the same responsibility from the Cabildo and a response commensurate with the urgency and importance of these matters. Lack of coordination cannot continue to hinder actions that directly benefit the citizens.”
