Extensive investigations are currently underway, including additional laboratory analyses and epidemiological studies to determine the origin and spread of the virus. The WHO has assured that medical attention is being provided to the passengers and crew of the cruise ship.
Furthermore, efforts are being made to sequence the virus, and it is noted that hantavirus infections are typically linked to environmental exposure, specifically contact with urine or feces from infected rodents. Although rare, hantavirus can be transmitted between people and can cause severe respiratory conditions.
The WHO is coordinating with affected member countries and the ship's operators to facilitate the medical evacuation of two passengers who have shown symptoms. A health risk assessment is also being conducted, and support is being provided to the remaining passengers, with a Disease Outbreak Notice being issued in accordance with International Health Regulations.
