The President of the La Gomera Island Council, Casimiro Curbelo, has reignited the debate over the controversial Fonsalía port, questioning the decision to discard it and criticizing the "hypocrisy" of those now protesting against port solutions.

Curbelo stated that the Los Cristianos (Tenerife) pier will not be expanded due to legal-technical reasons and lamented that the Fonsalía port option was discarded. "We need to explain why the Fonsalía port option was discarded and why real alternatives have not been developed," he declared in a statement.
The Gomera leader strongly criticized those who participated in decision-making and are now protesting against the proposed actions, calling their attitude "outright hypocrisy." He called for "telling things as they are" and addressing the problem with technical solutions.

The Fonsalía port has previously been discarded by the Government of the Canary Islands. Various groups and scientific voices have opposed its construction, arguing it would "irreversibly" harm an environment protected by the European Union and has faced repeated rejections from the Spanish Government due to concerns about its environmental impact assessment (EIA).
The president of the Tenerife Island Council, Rosa Dávila, had to clarify Curbelo's statements at the time. Curbelo, a member of the Board of Directors of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, was reminded by Dávila that while the project's processing was not directly her corporation's responsibility, she would defend the interests of Tenerife and prevent further destruction of territory.

"I am the president of Tenerife, I had to tell him once, he governs the island of La Gomera but Tenerife has a president, her name is not Casimiro Curbelo, her name is Rosa Dávila, and the decisions made in Tenerife are made thinking about all the islands, but also thinking about Tenerife and not destroying more territory."

Regarding the option of transferring goods to other ports like Granadilla, Curbelo warned that it cannot be presented as a solution without considering existing technical reports. He maintained that cargo operations should not be conditioned by weather or the actual operational availability of that infrastructure.
In this regard, Curbelo urges progress in studying the feasibility of a direct connection between the Los Cristianos port and the highway, an action he considers "essential" for improving mobility and reducing pressure on the urban environment. Dávila had previously indicated last year that the undergrounding project for this connection was finalized, although construction could extend over the next two years.
