Pope Leo XIV has expressed his gratitude to the people of the Canary Islands for their welcome of the MV Hondius cruise ship, which was affected by a hantavirus outbreak, and has confirmed his visit to the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria on June 11th and 12th.

During the Regina Coeli prayer, the Sunday devotion observed during the Easter season, the pontiff addressed the faithful in Spanish to convey his appreciation. His words highlighted the hospitality of the inhabitants of the Canary Islands in allowing the disembarkation of the vessel's passengers.

"I want to thank the welcoming spirit that characterizes the people of the Canary Islands for allowing the arrival of the Hondius cruise ship."

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that, despite the initial hantavirus outbreak, all occupants of the ship appear healthy and have not shown symptoms. However, the WHO has recommended a 42-day isolation period, as the virus can take up to six weeks to manifest.
The disembarkation of passengers and crew from the MV Hondius began this Sunday on the island of Tenerife, where evacuations and repatriations are underway. In his message, the Pope also expressed his joy about the upcoming visit to the islands, which is part of his official trip to Spain.

"I am happy to be able to meet you next month during my visit to the islands!"
