The CajaCanarias Cultural Space in La Laguna hosts the exhibition ‘Legado-Archivo. Gregorio Peces-Barba. The Voice of Democracy and Human Rights’, which reviews the career of this figure from democratic Spain.

The opening of the exhibition, part of the II International City of La Laguna Campus, featured a conference and dialogue on the defense of democracy and human rights. Participants included Humberto Ríos Rodríguez, trustee of the Gregorio Peces-Barba Foundation, and Dulce Cairós Barreto, dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of La Laguna.
The event, held at Casa Anchieta, brought together specialists and the public to reflect on the thought of Gregorio Peces-Barba, recognized as one of the driving forces behind the 1978 Spanish Constitution. Attendees included Fernando Sánchez Cáceres, Director of Communication, Image, and Institutional Relations of the CajaCanarias Foundation, and Juan Antonio García García, Secretary General of the University of La Laguna.
Fernando Sánchez Cáceres highlighted the theme's connection to human rights and Peces-Barba's figure as an "intellectual benchmark" in Philosophy of Law, Public International Law, and the theory of fundamental rights, emphasizing the "full validity of the ethical and legal legacy".
Juan Antonio García stressed that the exhibition invites reflection on the current challenges of fundamental rights and the "intellectual legacy of a key figure in the development of contemporary constitutional and legal thought", thanking collaborators for fostering democratic debate.
Humberto Ríos emphasized Peces-Barba's contribution to building democratic Spain and to the thought on human rights, highlighting the Foundation's work in preserving his legacy.
Dulce Cairós underscored the importance of constantly defending human rights as the basis for coexistence, solidarity, and human dignity.
The exhibition, open until next July 30th, features documents, photographs, publications, and objects from Gregorio Peces-Barba's personal archive, held at the Multidisciplinary Library of the Colmenarejo Campus of the Universidad Carlos III of Madrid. The exhibition covers his roles as a lawyer, politician, and academic, including his participation in drafting the Constitution, his presidency of the Congress of Deputies, and his role as founder and rector of the Universidad Carlos III of Madrid.
