The Official State Gazette (BOE) has published a new instruction modifying the frequency of technical inspections for motorhomes and converted vans ('camperizadas'). This update, which replaces the 2023 regulations, aligns with the criteria set by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism regarding vehicle technical inspection (ITV).
According to the new Instruction PROT 2026/04, motorhomes over 4 years old will undergo ITV every two years, while those older than 10 years must have an annual inspection. For converted vans, the frequency is annual for vehicles up to 10 years old and semi-annual for those over a decade.
The regulations also clarify that motorhomes can circulate and park under the same conditions as other vehicles, respecting municipal ordinances. This interpretation is based on a 2018 Supreme Court ruling granting municipal ordinances the authority to regulate the parking and camping of these vehicles, except in authorized areas.
Furthermore, new regional legislative updates concerning motorhome reception areas as tourist accommodations are incorporated, including regulatory changes from Navarra, Extremadura, and the Community of Madrid. The instruction also addresses the new S-128 sign in the Catalogue of Vertical Traffic Signs, indicating the location of wastewater disposal points for caravans and motorhomes.
The DGT explained that the update is necessary to incorporate regulatory changes that have occurred over the past two and a half years and to align the content with the Ministry of Industry and Tourism's criteria.
